I’m no longer 25ish, but that was about the same time in my life that my tastes seriously shifted to Jazz. Initially, I was attracted to the serious instrumentation in this music. I mean, the instrumental solo’s weren’t confined to 8 or 16 bars, but were spread throughout the song and were shared across all the instruments (yes, even the drummer got some!). Some of my initial favorites included George Duke, Patrice Rushen, Jean-Luc Ponty, Stanley Clarke, Chick Corea and Return to Forever, Pat Metheny, Grover Washington Jr, Weather Report (with special recognition to Jaco Pastorius), Stanley Jordan, Tom Scott, Billy Cobham, and John McLaughlin to name a few. Others included: Najee, George Howard, and Kirk Whalum.

I think most people experience a musical maturing process in their 20’s. I know I did. I was into rock & hip-hop, and became attracted to jazz for the intensity and emotion that was put into the music. Once I heard John Coltrane play “My Favorite Things”, I was hooked.
Strangely enough, I also got into more intense and emotional rock-based music too. Stuff like Meshuggah, Killswitch Engage, Opeth, Dillinger Escape Plan, etc.
But, coming from a hip-hop background, if jazz is more your thing now, check out Steve Coleman & Five Elements, Me’shell Ndegeocello’s Spirit Music Jamia, or Russell Gunn.
My favorite jazz songs get sampled by blackmoon brand nubian and wu tang were my favorite groups as got older my favorite groups as got older my taste in how many emcees check it out.
